-
The Khorezmshakh Heritage (UNESCO): Travel to the Kunya-Urgench historical and architectural reserve (120 km). Enjoy an expert-led tour of medieval Islamic masterpieces that survived the onslaught of Genghis Khan. You will explore the monumental 60-metre Kutlug-Timur Minaret (the tallest in Central Asia), the mausoleums of Sultans Tekesh and Il-Arslan, the ancient gates of the Caravan-serai, and the breathtaking turquoise dome of the Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum with its exquisite geometric mosaic.
-
Expedition into the Karakum: Following lunch in Dashoguz and a brief stop to gather traditional oriental supplies, switch to powerful 4×4 off-road vehicles and head south into the isolated heart of the great Karakum Desert (~300 km, approx. 5 hours of travel).
-
The Magic of the “Gates of Hell”: Arrive at the spectacular Darvaza gas crater. Settle into our comfortable, traditional yurt camp. As dusk falls, approach the very edge of the 70-metre blazing abyss. Witness the stunning moment when the sunset sun sinks into the sands, and the ink-black desert sky is lit up by a roaring flame that has been burning continuously since 1971.
-
A Night Under the Stars: Savour an authentic barbecue dinner freshly prepared over the campfire by our team, followed by a cosy overnight stay in traditional yurts by the crater’s edge.
Day 3: Darvaza Crater → Desert Natural Wonders → Return to Ashgabat
-
Sunrise Over the Abyss: For those interested, an early awakening offers a unique photography session at the crater’s rim as the flames soften against the morning sun. Enjoy a fresh, country-style breakfast in the open air, accompanied by the crisp desert breeze.
-
Contrasts of the Karakum: Journey back south towards the capital along the P-18 highway. To break up the drive and enhance the journey, make photo stops at two rare natural depressions — the Water and Mud craters, featuring bubbling turquoise water and therapeutic hot mud.
-
Premium Relaxation: Arrive in Ashgabat in the afternoon (approx. 3.5–4 hours in transit) and check into your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure: wash away the desert dust in the pool, unwind in the luxury spa area, shop for authentic hand-woven Turkmen carpets, or indulge in dinner at an exquisite panoramic restaurant.
-
Overnight: Premium hotel in Ashgabat.
Day 4: Ashgabat → Travel to Mary → Interactive Ethno-Experience and Ancient Merv
-
Heading East: Following breakfast at the hotel, set off by comfortable vehicles along a modern, smooth highway eastward to the city of Mary (~370 km, approx. 4.5 hours in transit).
-
Culture of the “Turkmen Hearth”: Before delving into ancient history, enjoy an exclusive interactive lunch at an ethnographic complex. This is a living cultural experience: meet legendary Alabay dogs and noble Bactrian camels, try on authentic national costumes and fluffy telpek hats for a colourful photoshoot inside a yurt, and take part in a masterclass baking traditional churek bread in a clay tamdyr oven.
-
Secrets of Ancient Merv (UNESCO): A comprehensive excursion through one of the oldest and largest archaeological parks in the world. Explore the magnificent Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar (a 12th-century Seljuk masterpiece), the unique “corrugated” mudbrick fortresses of Greater and Lesser Kyz-Kala, the ancient citadels of Erk-Kala and Gyaur-Kala, as well as beautifully preserved medieval hammams and sardoba ice-houses.
-
Overnight: Hotel in the city of Mary.
Day 5: Mary → Turkmenabat → Farap Border Crossing (Departure to Bukhara)
-
Silk Road Transit: A morning breakfast followed by a comfortable transfer towards Turkmenabat (~310 km, approx. 4 hours of travel). En route, pause at the picturesque ruins of the ancient Amul-Gala fortress, which guarded passing merchant caravans for centuries.
-
Eastern Flavours of Lebap: Take a short stroll through the vibrant, aromatic Green Bazaar of Turkmenabat to pick up authentic Lebap delicacies and dried fruits for the road. Before approaching the checkpoint, enjoy a panoramic stop by the majestic Amu Darya River — the primary waterway of Central Asia.
