Your expert guide will design a bespoke route shaped entirely around your arrival schedule, personal pace, and specific interests. This guided exploration offers an ideal introduction to the country, showcasing the unique intersection of ancient history, rich Turkmen culture, and monumentally striking modern white-marble architecture.

Day 2: Ashgabat to Kow-Ata, Nohur and the Caspian Coast

The morning begins with a prompt 07:00 departure from Ashgabat, heading west towards the Balkan region.

Our first stop is the famous Kow-Ata underground thermal lake. Descend into the deep limestone cavern to view this unique natural phenomenon, where you have the option to take a rejuvenating swim in the mineral-rich waters, consistently naturally heated to 35°C.

From the cavern, the route ascends into the Kopetdag mountains to visit the isolated village of Nohur, renowned for its distinct local traditions and architecture. The journey then continues westward across the changing landscapes of the Balkan province, arriving at the Caspian Sea port city of Turkmenbashi by evening. Conclude the day with a walk along the coastal promenade followed by a dinner featuring local delicacies, including fresh catch of the day and grilled sturgeon.

Overnight: Hotel in Turkmenbashi.

Day 3: Turkmenbashi to Yangykala Canyon and Return to Ashgabat

We depart Turkmenbashi at 07:00 to ensure maximum daylight within one of the country’s most spectacular natural landmarks: Yangykala Canyon.

Often described as the Grand Canyon of Central Asia, Yangykala features breathtaking limestone cliffs banded with intense shades of red, pink, and white. Your guide will lead you along the scenic overlooks of these ancient marine deposits, providing exceptional opportunities for landscape photography. A packed lunch box will be served open-air with views stretching across the canyon floor.

In the afternoon, we begin the return drive to Ashgabat (approximately 6 hours), offering a quiet opportunity to observe the desert terrain shift colours as the sun sets over the dunes.

Overnight: Hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 4: Ashgabat to Ancient Merv and Departure

An early morning departure takes you east from Ashgabat towards the Mary oasis region. After a traditional lunch at a local restaurant in Mary or Bayramali, you will begin an extensive guided tour of Ancient Merv, a premier UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park.

The historical exploration includes:

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: A 12th-century masterpiece of Seljuk architecture and a landmark of the medieval Islamic world.

  • Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala: Iconic, corrugated mud-brick fortress ruins dating from the 7th to the 12th centuries.

  • Mausoleums of the Askhabs: The sacred burial sites of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad.

  • Ancient Hammam and Sardoba: The structural remnants of medieval public baths and sophisticated desert water storage systems.

  • Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala: Ancient citadels offering panoramic views across the vast archaeological landscape.

Following the tour, relax on the return journey to the capital as twilight settles over the desert. The programme concludes with a direct transfer to Ashgabat International Airport (ASB) for your final onward flight.
