After landing at Ashgabat International Airport (ASB), complete the immigration and customs procedures before entering the arrivals hall. Our friendly local representative will be waiting to welcome you and assist with your transfer, making your arrival as easy and convenient as possible.

Day 2: Ashgabad – Turkmenbashi (night train)

Today offers a fascinating contrast between the elegant white-marble boulevards of Ashgabat and the timeless landscapes of the Karakum Desert as you travel overnight towards the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Following breakfast, set out on a guided sightseeing tour of Ashgabat, one of Central Asia’s most distinctive capitals. Admire its striking white-marble buildings, impressive monuments, landscaped parks and cultural landmarks while learning about the city’s remarkable history and modern development.

Traditional Turkmen Lunch

During the excursion, enjoy lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, where you will have the opportunity to taste a variety of traditional Turkmen specialities prepared using regional recipes.

Evening Departure to Turkmenbashi

Later in the afternoon, transfer to Ashgabat Railway Station to board the overnight train bound for Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan’s principal port on the Caspian Sea. The journey offers a unique opportunity to experience the country’s vast desert scenery as you travel across the heart of the Karakum.

Dinner Before Departure

As the train leaves in the early evening, there is insufficient time for a restaurant dinner before departure. Instead, your guide will accompany you to a nearby café or local market, where you can purchase a freshly prepared takeaway meal, seasonal fruit and light refreshments to enjoy during the journey.

Overnight on the Train

Spend the night in a comfortable four-berth sleeping compartment, travelling across the tranquil desert landscapes towards western Turkmenistan. Relax with a cup of tea, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of rail travel and look forward to arriving on the Caspian coast the following morning.

 

Day 3: Turkmenbashi – Yangikala Canyon – Balkan Region

 

Journey to Yangykala Canyon: From Port Turkmenbashi to Martian Landscapes

Arrival in Turkmenbashi

Your day begins with an early morning arrival in Turkmenbashi at approximately 08:05, following the overnight train journey from Ashgabat. Upon arrival, your private driver and guide will meet you at the railway station, ready to begin another unforgettable day exploring western Turkmenistan.

Discover Turkmenbashi and the Caspian Coast

Before setting off towards the canyon, enjoy a short sightseeing tour of Turkmenbashi, the country’s principal port on the Caspian Sea. Discover its fascinating blend of history and architecture, including elegant limestone buildings dating back to the late nineteenth century and the beautifully preserved 1895 Moorish-style railway station. Take in panoramic views of the Caspian coastline before continuing your journey.

For travellers wishing to explore further, an optional visit to the nearby Awaza National Tourist Zone can be arranged. This excursion is subject to local access regulations and the area’s availability at the time of your visit.

Lunch by the Caspian Sea

Scenic Drive to Yangykala Canyon

Leave Turkmenbashi behind and travel approximately 160 kilometres across western Turkmenistan towards the spectacular Yangykala Canyon, one of the country’s most breathtaking natural attractions. The drive takes around three hours, with the final stretch following unpaved desert tracks that add a sense of adventure to the journey and reveal the remote beauty of the Karakum landscape.

After sunset, continue south towards your hotel in the Balkan Region, with a journey of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Day 4: Balkan Region – Nohur – Kow-Ata – Ashgabad

Morning Departure from Ashgabat

After breakfast, depart from your hotel at 08:30 and begin a scenic drive south-east from Ashgabat. The modern highway follows the impressive Kopetdag Mountains, offering spectacular views of rocky peaks, deep valleys and ever-changing mountain scenery throughout the journey.

Discover Nohur Mountain Village

Nestled more than 1,000 metres above sea level, Nohur is one of Turkmenistan’s most distinctive mountain settlements. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, the village has remained largely unchanged for generations, preserving its rich cultural heritage and traditional way of life.

Your visit to Nohur includes:

• A picturesque drive through winding mountain roads leading to one of the country’s most secluded communities.
• Exploration of the remarkable Nohur cemetery, where many graves are decorated with the horns of mountain goats — a centuries-old custom unique to this region and closely linked to local beliefs.

Please note: Access to Nohur depends on weather and road conditions. During periods of heavy rainfall or winter snowfall, the itinerary may be adjusted to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, with an alternative lunch location arranged if required.

Visit Kow-Ata Underground Lake

In the afternoon, continue to the famous Bakharden Cave, home to one of Turkmenistan’s most extraordinary natural attractions — Kow-Ata Underground Lake.

A pleasant walk leads to the cave entrance before descending into its vast limestone chamber, where the naturally heated underground lake has attracted visitors for centuries. The mineral-rich, hydrogen sulphide waters remain at a constant temperature of around 35°C throughout the year, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing swim after a day of exploration.

Return to Ashgabat

Following your visit to Kow-Ata, begin the return journey to Ashgabat, travelling approximately 100 kilometres in around 1.5 hours while enjoying the final views of the surrounding mountain landscapes.

Day 5: Ashgabad – Ancient Merv – Ashgabad

 

One-Day Expedition to Ancient Merv: A Journey Through Centuries

Morning Departure from Ashgabat

Begin the day with an early departure from Ashgabat at 07:30, travelling east along the modern Ashgabat–Mary motorway. This comfortable drive covers approximately 360 kilometres and takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, offering changing views of Turkmenistan’s vast plains and desert landscapes along the way.

Traditional Lunch in the Mary Region

Upon arrival in the Mary Region, enjoy a traditional lunch at a carefully selected restaurant in Mary or Bayramaly. This is an excellent opportunity to experience authentic Turkmen cuisine prepared using local ingredients and regional recipes.

Discover Ancient Merv

After lunch, continue to Ancient Merv, one of Central Asia’s most remarkable archaeological sites and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a flourishing city on the legendary Silk Road, Ancient Merv preserves the legacy of several great civilisations that shaped the history of the region.

During your guided exploration, visit some of the site’s most significant monuments, including:

• Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum – the magnificent 12th-century mausoleum of the Seljuk ruler, celebrated for its remarkable architecture and impressive double-domed design.
• Big Kyz-Kala and Small Kyz-Kala – two iconic mud-brick fortresses distinguished by their distinctive corrugated walls and exceptional state of preservation.
• Askhab Mausoleums and the Ancient Sardoba – an important religious and historical complex featuring sacred mausoleums, the remains of medieval bathhouses and an ingenious ancient water storage system that once sustained life in the desert.
