Tour Programme

Day 1: Shavat — Dashoguz — Darvaza

From Ancient Oases to Desert Flames

  • The Adventure Begins: Our journey commences at the northern border. Following a meet-and-greet at the “Shavat” checkpoint, we set off for Dashoguz. Here, you will experience your first tastes of Turkmenistan with a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a brief visit to a colourful oriental bazaar to browse authentic local delicacies and spices.

  • Journey into the Karakum: We transfer to powerful 4×4 vehicles and venture deep into the legendary Karakum Desert for a drive of approximately 300 kilometres. Scenic stops at authentic roadside teahouses (chaykhanas) allow you to briefly slow down and immerse yourself in the serene, untamed rhythm of desert life.

  • A Night by the “Gates of Hell”: The evening is dedicated entirely to Turkmenistan’s ultimate natural phenomenon—the Darvaza Gas Crater. Witness a truly mesmerizing spectacle as the delicate pastel hues of the desert sunset give way to the fierce, fiery glow of the giant abyss illuminating the pitch-black night sky.

  • Overnight: Enjoy a freshly prepared campfire barbecue dinner and spend the night in an atmospheric yurt camp pitched right on the edge of the blazing crater.

Day 2: Darvaza — Ashgabat

Natural Anomalies and White-Marble Triumphs

  • Sunrise Magic: Greet the first rays of light rising over the endless desert dunes. Following breakfast in the camp and packing up, our 4×4 vehicles chart a course towards the capital.

  • Desert Contrasts: The road holds fascinating surprises. En route to Ashgabat, we venture off-track to witness two extraordinary natural anomalies—the “Water” and “Mud” craters, hidden amidst the rolling sand hills.

  • Splendour of Ashgabat: In the afternoon, the wild desert landscape transitions into a futuristic metropolis. A comprehensive city tour awaits you in Ashgabat, a proud Guinness World Record holder for the highest concentration of white-marble buildings. Behold monumental squares, grand palaces, the unique Arch of Neutrality, modern parks, and the striking golden domes of the main mosques.

  • Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant and accommodation in a comfortable premium hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 3: Ashgabat — Merv — Farap

The Silk Road Legacy and Final Dash to the Oxus

  • Heading East: An early departure from the capital sets us on our way. Our vehicles travel towards the eastern reaches of the country, traversing the vast desert plains towards an ancient historical oasis.

  • The Breath of Eternity: This segment is dedicated to exploring Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most significant archaeological parks. Walk amidst the ruins of a once-mighty ancient megacity, pass through the uniquely corrugated walls of the Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala fortresses, visit the grand Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, and discover the history of this vital crossroads on the Great Silk Road.

  • Across the Country: Following lunch in the oasis, we drive towards Turkmenabat, cross the mighty Amu Darya River, and complete our final transit leg to the eastern border.

  • Farewell to Turkmenistan: Arrive at the “Farap” border checkpoint in the afternoon. Your guide will provide comprehensive assistance with all customs and migration formalities before you bid farewell to Turkmenistan and cross over to the Uzbek side towards glorious Bukhara.
