Turkmenistan Transit Tour: A 3-Day Journey from Merv to Ashgabat

Your Itinerary: Farap Border (Uzbekistan) – Ancient Merv – Ashgabat – Howdan Border (Iran) or Ashgabat Airport

Transform your transit through Turkmenistan into an elegant three-day journey. This route connects a grand past with an ambitious future. Furthermore, this flexible path is the most spectacular way to travel from the Uzbek frontier to the gates of Persia.

Your adventure begins at the Farap border. Firstly, we lead you to the majestic ruins of Ancient Merv (UNESCO). This oasis was a place where great Silk Road empires intertwined for centuries. Afterwards, you will arrive in Ashgabat, the radiant white-marble capital, for a bespoke sightseeing tour. Finally, on your last day, you can choose to cross the scenic Howdan border into Iran or head to the airport for your flight.

Tour programme:

Day 1: Farap border → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat

Your odyssey starts at 09:00 AM on the Turkmen side of the Farap (Alat) border. We will meet you at the gateway to the country. Our team handles all formalities so your introduction to Turkmenistan is comfortable and easy.

As we leave the border, we set off on a 250-kilometre journey into the legendary Mary Oasis. Before we explore the history, we pause in Bayramaly. Here, you can enjoy a traditional lunch in a soulful local teahouse. This is the perfect way to settle into the unhurried rhythm of the East.

An Immersion into Ancient History

After lunch, the gates of Ancient Merv open before you. This UNESCO World Heritage site was once one of the greatest metropolises in the world. Your expert guide will lead you through the footsteps of fallen empires:

  • Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum: Stand in awe before this 12th-century architectural titan.

  • Kyz-Kala Fortresses: Touch the mysterious “corrugated” walls of the Greater and Lesser fortresses.

  • Shrines of the Ashabs: Feel the unique spiritual energy within these silent shrines.

  • History of Engineering: Explore the ruins of medieval hammams and ancient water storage systems (sardobas).

  • Citadel Panoramas: Ascend the citadels of Erk-Kala and Gyaur-Kala for a breathtaking view of the archaeological park.

Journey to the Marble Capital

Afterwards, we set our course for Ashgabat (approx. 350 km). You can relax and watch the desert landscape transform into the shimmering lights of the capital.

Ashgabat greets you with dazzling brilliance. After checking into your hotel, you may choose to relax or join a short panoramic night tour. The city is a work of art after dark. We will drive past white-marble monuments and stop at a viewpoint to capture the sea of city lights.

Day 2: Ashgabat (Full Day)

Following a leisurely breakfast, your second day begins. This day is entirely dedicated to the shimmering capital. Notably, this is a bespoke exploration tailored to your personal rhythm.

Your expert guide will craft a journey that maximises every moment. Whether you prefer ancient history or avant-garde architecture, the day unfolds according to your interests. This programme offers a perfect symphony of Turkmenistan’s rich heritage and its striking marble skyline. You will experience the soul of a city that blends timeless traditions with a bold vision of the future.

As the sun sets, you will return to your hotel, enriched by a day that was uniquely yours.

Day 3: Ashgabat → Howdan border (Gaudan) or Ashgabat Airport

Savour your final morning in Turkmenistan with a relaxed breakfast. This day serves as the final brushstroke on your portrait of the country. Once again, we embark on a bespoke tour of Ashgabat, fully adapted to your schedule.

Your guide will lead you to hidden gems or grand monuments you may have missed. It is a moment to appreciate the harmony between ancient heritage and record-breaking modern architecture.

The Farewell and Departure

When it is time to say goodbye, we ensure a seamless departure based on your plans:

  • To Iran: At 15:00, we depart for the Howdan (Gaudan) border. You will travel through scenic mountains towards Bajgiran.
