This Turkmenistan Transit Tour is the perfect way to explore the country’s most famous attractions while travelling between Khiva and Ashgabat.
Continue to Ashgabat, renowned for its striking white-marble architecture, and enjoy a private guided sightseeing tour of the capital’s most iconic landmarks. In the evening, board a comfortable overnight train back to Dashoguz, making the most of your time in Turkmenistan.
On the final day, discover the remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kunya-Urgench, home to some of Central Asia’s finest medieval monuments. Your adventure concludes with a convenient departure through either the Shavat Border back to Khiva or the Hojaili Border for onward travel to Nukus.
Day 1: Shavat Border – Dashoguz – Darvaza Gas Crater
10:00 AM (Approx.): Upon your arrival at the Shavat Border Control Terminal on the Turkmen side, complete immigration and passport formalities. During the process, border officials will notify our team of your arrival, and your local English-speaking guide will meet you inside the terminal using your photo for easy identification.
Dashoguz: Travel to Dashoguz, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Turkmen lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, visit the lively local bazaar to experience everyday life and, if you wish, purchase snacks and essentials for your journey into the desert.
Journey Across the Karakum Desert: Continue towards the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, covering approximately 300 km in 4–4.5 hours. The route passes through the heart of the Central Karakum Desert, where some sections are unpaved and uneven, adding an authentic off-road adventure to the experience.
Darvaza Gas Crater: Arrive at the legendary Darvaza Gas Crater, often called the “Shining of Karakum.” As daylight fades, watch the crater transform into a spectacular natural fire pit, with its flames becoming even more dramatic after sunset.
Evening & Dinner: Enjoy a freshly prepared traditional barbecue dinner served in the open air at the nearby yurt camp. After dinner, take in the unforgettable atmosphere of the glowing crater, one of the best times for photography beneath the clear desert sky.
Overnight: Spend the night in a traditional Turkmen yurt near the Darvaza Gas Crater, surrounded by the peaceful landscape of the Karakum Desert.
Day 2: Darvaza Gas Crater – Ashgabat – Overnight Train to Dashoguz
Sunrise at Darvaza (Optional): Wake up early for an optional visit to the edge of the Darvaza Gas Crater. The peaceful hours before sunrise offer a unique opportunity to admire the final glow of the flames and capture stunning photographs as daylight gradually illuminates the Karakum Desert.
Breakfast & Journey to Ashgabat: After breakfast at the yurt camp, depart for Ashgabat, travelling approximately 270 km across the Karakum Desert in around 3.5 hours. Parts of the route are unpaved and uneven, providing an authentic off-road desert driving experience.
Desert Crater Stops: Along the way, stop to visit the fascinating Water Crater and Mud Crater, two remarkable natural formations that showcase the unique geological landscape of the Karakum Desert.
Lunch: Upon arrival in Ashgabat, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing your sightseeing.
Ashgabat City Tour: Spend the afternoon exploring Ashgabat with your private guide. Visit the city’s impressive white-marble boulevards, iconic landmarks, grand monuments, and cultural attractions while enjoying a tour tailored to your interests and pace.
Dinner: Before your evening departure, enjoy a relaxed dinner at a local café or restaurant. If preferred, your guide can also help arrange takeaway food and snacks to enjoy during the overnight train journey.
Train to Dashoguz: Transfer to Ashgabat Railway Station and board the overnight train to Dashoguz, scheduled to depart at 20:30.
Overnight: Travel in a comfortable four-berth sleeper compartment, allowing you to rest as the train heads north towards Dashoguz.
Day 3: Dashoguz – Kunya-Urgench – Shavat Border (Khiva) or Hojaili Border (Nukus)
08:45 AM – Arrival in Dashoguz: Arrive in Dashoguz by overnight train from Ashgabat, where your private driver will be waiting to welcome you at the railway station before the day’s journey begins.
Journey to Kunya-Urgench: Travel approximately 100 km (around 1.5–2 hours) to Kunya-Urgench, the former capital of the Khorezm Empire and one of Turkmenistan’s most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Guided Tour of Kunya-Urgench: Discover the remarkable medieval monuments of this ancient Silk Road city, including:
- Kutlug-Timur Minaret – the tallest surviving medieval minaret in Central Asia.
- Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum – renowned for its magnificent geometric mosaic dome and exceptional architectural design.
- Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum and Il-Arslan Mausoleum – impressive examples of medieval Islamic architecture distinguished by their elegant conical domes.
- Caravanserai Gate – one of the historic entrances that once welcomed merchants travelling along the legendary Silk Road.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant in Kunya-Urgench before continuing to the border.
Private Transfer to the Border: Depending on your onward travel plans in Uzbekistan, choose one of the following transfer options:
Option A – Shavat Border Crossing (Khiva / Urgench): Travel via Dashoguz to the Shavat Border, approximately 130 km (around 2 hours), ideal for travellers returning to Khiva or Urgench.
Option B – Hojaili Border Crossing (Nukus / Muynak): Drive approximately 35 km (around 45 minutes) to the Hojaili Border, the most convenient option for continuing to Nukus or Muynak.
