Tour Overview

This 2-day Ancient Merv and Turkmen Ojagy tour from Bukhara is a compact cultural and historical journey into eastern Turkmenistan, combining Silk Road heritage, local city life and an immersive ethnographic experience.

Enter Turkmenistan through the Farap Border and begin with a guided introduction to Turkmenabat, including the ancient Amul Fortress, the Lebap Regional History Museum and the lively Green Bazaar.

Continue to Mary for an overnight stay before exploring UNESCO-listed Ancient Merv, one of the most important archaeological sites along the historic Silk Road.

The second day also includes a visit to Turkmen Ojagy, where you can experience traditional Turkmen culture, meet Alabay dogs and Bactrian camels, try national clothing and take part in a traditional bread-baking demonstration.

After completing the programme, return to the Farap Border for your onward journey to Bukhara.

Day 1: Farap Border – Turkmenabat – Mary

After crossing from Uzbekistan, complete passport, customs and migration formalities at the Farap Border.

Meet our local guide on the Turkmen side of the border terminal.

Our team will assist you with the necessary entry procedures before beginning the tour.

Transfer to Turkmenabat

Continue to nearby Turkmenabat, one of the main cities of eastern Turkmenistan.

Amul Fortress

Begin the day with a visit to the historic Amul Fortress.

Explore the remains of this ancient settlement, once an important Silk Road trading centre connecting Merv, Bukhara and Khorezm.

Your guide will explain the role of Amul in regional trade and travel across Central Asia.

Lebap Regional History Museum

Continue to the Lebap Regional History Museum.

Discover archaeological artefacts, traditional Turkmen carpets, ethnographic displays and historical exhibits connected with the cultural heritage of the Lebap region.

Traditional Lunch

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or chaikhana in Turkmenabat.

Drive to Mary

In the late afternoon, leave Turkmenabat and travel towards Mary along the modern highway.

    The Farap–Alat crossing concludes the Turkmenistan portion of the journey. After departure formalities, onward travel on the Uzbek side proceeds independently or under a separate arrangement.

    Turkmenabat is a major city of Lebap in the Amu Darya valley. It is the base for Dayahatyn and concludes the itinerary with a regional museum, ancient Amul and river scenery.

    Amul's earthen remains recall an ancient settlement near modern Turkmenabat. Its fortifications connect the city's history with the trade routes and river crossings of the Amu Darya valley.

    Mary is a modern city of the Murgab oasis and a base for Merv and Gonur Depe. Its streets and public buildings complement the archaeological visits with an introduction to regional life.

    Ancient Merv

    Merv brings together the remains of neighbouring cities from different periods. The archaeological park reveals changing fortifications and centres of life within a major Silk Road oasis.

    This substantial domed mausoleum recalls Merv's Seljuk period. Its proportions and surviving decorative details make it a prominent architectural landmark among the city's ruins.

    Greater Kyz Kala
    Greater Kyz Kala is recognisable by its substantial corrugated walls. This fortified earthen building on a raised base displays distinctive construction techniques associated with the Merv oasis.

    Lesser Kyz Kala stands near the better-known larger building. Comparing the two ruins highlights differences in scale and preservation within Merv's distinctive earthen architecture.

  10. Askhabs Mausoleums

    The Askhabs mausoleums represent the pilgrimage traditions of Merv. Their memorial structures connect the archaeological landscape with local reverence for early followers of Islam.

    A sardoba is a water-storage structure of particular importance in an arid oasis. Several survive at Merv, illustrating urban water supply and protection of stored water from evaporation.

    Erk Kala is one of Merv's early fortified enclosures. Its high earthen ramparts outline an ancient urban space and help visitors understand the oasis's defensive structures.

  13. Merv Gyaur Kala

    Gyaur Kala forms an extensive fortified area of ancient Merv. Its layout and long ramparts reveal the scale of the city that developed beside the earlier Erk Kala.

  14. Turkmen Ojagy Cultural Complex

    Turkmen Ojagy introduces traditional domestic life and hospitality. The programme combines lunch with opportunities to see national clothing, a yurt and bread-making in a tamdyr oven.
