About This 4-Day Khiva to Bukhara Transit Tour
This 4-day Khiva to Bukhara via Turkmenistan overnight train tour combines the Karakum Desert, Darvaza Gas Crater, Ashgabat and Turkmenabat in one convenient overland transit route between Uzbekistan’s historic cities.
Enter Turkmenistan through the Shavat border near Khiva and travel across the Central Karakum Desert to the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, where you will spend the night in a traditional Turkmen yurt.
The following day, continue south towards Ashgabat, stopping at the Water and Mud craters before exploring the capital’s distinctive white-marble architecture.
Day three provides additional time to discover Ashgabat before boarding the 19:50 overnight train to Turkmenabat. On the final day, explore local life in Turkmenabat, visit the Green Bazaar and Amul Fortress, stop beside the Amu Darya River and continue to the Farap border for your onward journey to Bukhara.

Day 1 – Shavat Border, Dashoguz and Darvaza Gas Crater
Meet at the Shavat Border
At approximately 10:00 AM, meet our local guide inside the main hall of the Shavat Border Control Terminal on the Turkmen side.
While you complete migration and passport formalities, the border officers will contact our team. Your guide will enter the terminal and recognise you using the photograph provided in advance.
Dashoguz Stop
Travel to Dashoguz for a traditional local lunch.
Afterwards, visit the local bazaar to experience everyday life and purchase fruit, snacks or other supplies for the desert journey.
Drive Across the Karakum Desert
Leave Dashoguz and travel south towards Darvaza through the Central Karakum Desert.
The journey covers approximately 300 km and takes around 4–4.5 hours.
Please note that some sections of the road are rough and uneven, so the drive may be bumpy in places.
Darvaza Gas Crater
Arrive at the spectacular Darvaza Gas Crater towards sunset.
As daylight fades, the glow of the burning crater becomes increasingly dramatic against the surrounding desert.
BBQ Dinner and Evening at Darvaza
Enjoy a traditional open-air BBQ dinner freshly prepared by our team at the yurt camp.
After dark, spend time near the crater and enjoy excellent opportunities for night photography beneath the desert sky.

Day 2 – Darvaza, Desert Craters and Ashgabat
Optional Sunrise Experience
Travellers who wish to wake early can make an optional pre-dawn visit to the crater.

Breakfast and Departure
Enjoy breakfast at the yurt camp before beginning the journey south towards Ashgabat.
The route covers approximately 270 km and takes around 3.5 hours.
Some sections of the desert road remain rough and uneven, so the journey may be bumpy.

On the way to Ashgabat, make short stops at the Water Crater and Mud Crater.
