Travel overland from Khiva to Bukhara through Turkmenistan on this immersive 4-day transit tour combining desert landscapes, UNESCO heritage, modern Ashgabat and traditional Turkmen culture.
Enter Turkmenistan through the Shavat Border and cross the vast Karakum Desert towards the legendary Darvaza Gas Crater, where you will spend an unforgettable night in a traditional Turkmen yurt beside the glowing crater.
Continue south towards Ashgabat, stopping at the unusual Water and Mud craters before exploring the capital’s remarkable white-marble architecture. From Ashgabat, travel east to Mary and discover the ancient Silk Road ruins of Ancient Merv, followed by an authentic cultural experience at Turkmen Ojagy.
Your journey then continues towards Turkmenabat and the Farap Border, with a scenic stop beside the Amu Darya River before crossing into Uzbekistan and continuing towards Bukhara.
Day 1: Shavat Border – Dashoguz – Darvaza Gas Crater
10:00 AM approximately – Shavat Border Meeting
After entering Turkmenistan through the Shavat Border, complete the required passport and migration formalities inside the main hall of the Turkmen border terminal.
Border officers will contact our team, and your local guide will enter the terminal to meet you directly using the photograph provided in advance.
Dashoguz Stop
After leaving the border, drive to Dashoguz for a traditional local lunch.
You will also have time to visit the local bazaar, experience everyday life in northern Turkmenistan and purchase snacks or supplies for the desert journey.
Journey Across the Karakum Desert
Continue towards the Darvaza Gas Crater, approximately 300 km from Dashoguz. The journey usually takes around 4 to 4.5 hours.
Parts of the road are rough and uneven, so expect a bumpy drive through the Central Karakum Desert. This section of the journey is part of the authentic overland desert experience.
Darvaza Gas Crater – Shining of the Karakum
Arrive at the spectacular Darvaza Gas Crater in time to experience the changing desert light around sunset.
As darkness falls, the flames become increasingly dramatic, creating one of Turkmenistan’s most memorable night-time landscapes.
Traditional BBQ Dinner
Enjoy a freshly prepared open-air BBQ dinner at the yurt camp.
After dinner, spend time beside the crater and experience the fiery glow beneath the clear desert sky. The evening is also ideal for photography.
Overnight: Traditional Turkmen yurt at the Darvaza crater camp.
Day 2: Darvaza Gas Crater – Water Crater – Mud Crater – Ashgabat
Optional Sunrise Experience
Wake before dawn for an optional visit to the crater edge.
The early morning offers a different perspective as the remaining flames glow against the first light over the Karakum Desert.
Breakfast and Departure
Return to the camp for breakfast before beginning the journey south towards Ashgabat, approximately 270 km away.
The drive normally takes around 3.5 hours. Some sections of the desert road remain rough and uneven, so the journey may be bumpy in places.
Water Crater and Mud Crater
On the way to Ashgabat, stop briefly at the unusual Water Crater and Mud Crater.
These geological formations provide an interesting contrast to the burning Darvaza Gas Crater and reveal another side of the Karakum Desert landscape.
Lunch in Ashgabat
After arriving in the capital, stop for lunch before beginning your city tour.
Ashgabat City Tour
Spend the afternoon exploring Ashgabat with your local guide.
Discover the city’s distinctive white-marble architecture, major monuments and cultural landmarks. The programme can be adapted to your pace and interests.

Day 3: Ashgabat City Tour – Mary
Morning Ashgabat City Tour
After breakfast at the hotel, continue exploring Ashgabat with your guide.
The morning programme is flexible and allows time to visit additional architectural landmarks and cultural attractions that were not covered the previous day.
Your sightseeing concludes with a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant.
Drive from Ashgabat to Mary
At approximately 14:00, depart Ashgabat and travel east along the Ashgabat–Mary High-Speed Motorway.
The distance is approximately 360 km, with an estimated driving time of 3.5 to 4 hours.
Arrival in Mary
Reach Mary in the early evening and transfer directly to your hotel for check-in.
The rest of the evening is free for you to relax and prepare for the following day’s visit to Ancient Merv and onward journey to the Uzbekistan border.

Day 4: Ancient Merv – Turkmen Ojagy – Amu Darya – Farap Border
08:30 AM – Ancient Merv Guided Tour
After an early breakfast, check out of the hotel and travel to the archaeological park of Ancient Merv.
Explore one of Central Asia’s most important historic Silk Road sites in the cooler morning hours.
Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar
Visit the monumental 12th-century mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, one of the finest surviving examples of Seljuk architecture and famous for its remarkable double-dome construction.
Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala
See the distinctive mud-brick fortresses of Greater Kyz Kala and Lesser Kyz Kala, recognised for their unusual corrugated walls and dating from between the 7th and 12th centuries.
Askhabs Mausoleums and Ancient Sardoba
Visit the sacred mausoleums associated with the companions of the Prophet Muhammad.
Nearby, explore the remains of medieval public baths and the historic Sardoba, an ingenious structure once used for storing water in the desert environment.
Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala
Explore the massive ancient settlements of Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala and enjoy panoramic views across the extensive archaeological landscape of Ancient Merv.

Drive to the Farap Border
At approximately 14:00, depart the Merv oasis and continue northeast towards the Uzbekistan border.
Travel along the Mary–Turkmenabat High-Speed Motorway, covering approximately 240 km in around 2.5 hours.
During the journey, make a short scenic photo stop beside the Amu Darya River before continuing towards the Farap border area.
Farap Border Crossing
Arrive at the Farap Border Checkpoint, where our team will assist you with the required Turkmen customs procedures and departure immigration formalities in accordance with official border regulations.
After completing the border crossing, continue into Uzbekistan towards Bukhara.
