Tour Programme

Day 1. Crossing the Amu Darya into the Oasis: Farap — Turkmenabat — Mary

  • Welcome to Turkmenistan: At 09:00, your dedicated guide and driver will meet you on the Turkmen side of the “Farap” border checkpoint. We take full care of all customs and immigration formalities to ensure your journey begins in absolute comfort.

  • The Ancient Outpost of Amul: Our path leads directly to Turkmenabat. The first stop is the majestic ruins of the Amul Fortress—which once guarded a crucial crossing over the Amu Darya river—followed by a visit to the Historical and Local Lore Museum, home to a unique collection of antique Turkmen carpets and rare artefacts.

  • Flavours of Lebap & The Green Bazaar: After a traditional lunch at a colourful local teahouse (chaykhana), we head to the famous Green Bazaar. This is living ethnography: here you can sample legendary sweet melons, breathe in the rich aromas of spices, and observe the unhurried daily rhythm of an eastern market town.

  • Cruising to Mary on the New Motorway: In the afternoon, we set off towards Mary. The journey takes place along the brand-new, state-of-the-art high-speed motorway, guaranteeing a smooth, rapid, and comfortable transit across the desert scenery.

  • Evening and Night: Check-in and unwind at a comfortable hotel in Mary.

Day 2. Silk Road Grandeur and Yurt Traditions: Merv — Farap

  • Hotel Breakfast and check-out to begin the day’s excursions.

  • The Great Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site): We will dedicate the morning to exploring one of the largest megacities of the ancient world, which was eventually swept from the earth by Genghis Khan’s army. The programme features:

    • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar: A temple of eternity and a masterpiece of 12th-century Seljuk architecture, whose gigantic dome once served as a literal beacon for desert caravans.

    • Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala: Unique “corrugated” raw-brick castles, standing like sci-fi clay monuments amidst the desert sands.

    • Shrines of the Askhabs: A profound look into history at the burial sites of the Prophet Muhammad’s companions.

    • Sardoba and Medieval Hammam: The secrets of desert survival and an inspection of sophisticated ancient underground engineering systems used for water storage.

    • Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala Citadels: We will ascend the massive ancient ramparts for a breathtaking, panoramic view over the endless archaeological park.

  • Ethnic Lunch and Interactive Show at “Turkmen Odzhagy”: Following our walk through the ruins, we move to a nearby ethnographic complex for full cultural immersion:

    • Alabays and Camels: Meet and photograph the pride of the nation—the legendary Alabay guard dogs—alongside the giants of the desert, the twin-humped camels.

    • Costume Photoshoot: Try on traditional silver-embroidered robes and the iconic sheepskin telpek hats inside an authentic Turkmen yurt.

    • Tamdyr Masterclass: Get hands-on experience with the ancient magic of baking national Turkmen bread—hot, fragrant chorek—straight from the clay oven.

  • Return Journey: Drive back to the border crossing (approximately 4.5 hours in transit).

  • Transfer to Farap Border: Assistance with final customs procedures and exit transition back into Uzbekistan.

  • End of the programme.
