Travel overland from Khiva to Bukhara through Turkmenistan<\/strong> on this immersive 4-day transit tour combining desert landscapes, UNESCO heritage, modern Ashgabat and traditional Turkmen culture.<\/p>\n

Enter Turkmenistan through the Shavat Border<\/strong> and cross the vast Karakum Desert towards the legendary Darvaza Gas Crater<\/strong>, where you will spend an unforgettable night in a traditional Turkmen yurt beside the glowing crater.<\/p>\n

Continue south towards Ashgabat<\/strong>, stopping at the unusual Water and Mud craters before exploring the capital’s remarkable white-marble architecture. From Ashgabat, travel east to Mary and discover the ancient Silk Road ruins of Ancient Merv<\/strong>, followed by an authentic cultural experience at Turkmen Ojagy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Your journey then continues towards Turkmenabat and the Farap Border<\/strong>, with a scenic stop beside the Amu Darya River before crossing into Uzbekistan and continuing towards Bukhara.<\/p>\n

Day 1: Shavat Border \u2013 Dashoguz \u2013 Darvaza Gas Crater<\/h2>\n

10:00 AM approximately \u2013 Shavat Border Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n

After entering Turkmenistan through the Shavat Border, complete the required passport and migration formalities inside the main hall of the Turkmen border terminal.<\/p>\n

Border officers will contact our team, and your local guide will enter the terminal to meet you directly using the photograph provided in advance.<\/p>\n

Dashoguz Stop<\/strong><\/p>\n

After leaving the border, drive to Dashoguz for a traditional local lunch.<\/p>\n

You will also have time to visit the local bazaar, experience everyday life in northern Turkmenistan and purchase snacks or supplies for the desert journey.<\/p>\n

Journey Across the Karakum Desert<\/strong><\/p>\n

Continue towards the Darvaza Gas Crater<\/strong>, approximately 300 km from Dashoguz. The journey usually takes around 4 to 4.5 hours.<\/p>\n

Parts of the road are rough and uneven, so expect a bumpy drive through the Central Karakum Desert. This section of the journey is part of the authentic overland desert experience.<\/p>\n

The early morning offers a different perspective as the remaining flames glow against the first light over the Karakum Desert.<\/p>\n

Return to the camp for breakfast before beginning the journey south towards Ashgabat<\/strong>, approximately 270 km away.<\/p>\n

The drive normally takes around 3.5 hours. Some sections of the desert road remain rough and uneven, so the journey may be bumpy in places.<\/p>\n

Water Crater and Mud Crater<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the way to Ashgabat, stop briefly at the unusual Water Crater<\/strong> and Mud Crater<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These geological formations provide an interesting contrast to the burning Darvaza Gas Crater and reveal another side of the Karakum Desert landscape.<\/p>\n

Lunch in Ashgabat<\/strong><\/p>\n

After arriving in the capital, stop for lunch before beginning your city tour.<\/p>\n

Spend the afternoon exploring Ashgabat<\/strong> with your local guide.<\/p>\n

The distance is approximately 360 km, with an estimated driving time of 3.5 to 4 hours.<\/p>\n

Reach Mary in the early evening and transfer directly to your hotel for check-in.<\/p>\n

The rest of the evening is free for you to relax and prepare for the following day’s visit to Ancient Merv and onward journey to the Uzbekistan border.<\/p>\n
