During its zenith in the 11th and 12th centuries, Urgench was hailed as the \u2018Heart of Islam\u2019, the \u2018Capital of a Thousand Sages\u2019, and the \u2018Rival of Baghdad\u2019. It was a city where gold flowed like a river and libraries guarded the collective wisdom of humanity since Antiquity. Yet, destiny reserved for it trials unlike any other city: it was twice erased from the face of the earth by history\u2019s greatest conquerors\u2014Genghis Khan<\/strong> and Tamerlane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        In 1221, the hordes of Genghis Khan arrived. The siege lasted seven months. Urgench did not surrender lightly; legends tell of residents fighting for every quarter, every house.<\/p>\n

        • The Vengeance of Genghis Khan:<\/strong> Enraged by the Khwarazmians\u2019 tenacity, the Great Khan ordered the destruction of the dam on the Amu Darya.           The Legend of Najmuddin Kubra<\/strong><\/p>\n

          The great Sufi sheikh and founder of the Kubrawiya order remained here during the Mongol invasion. Genghis Khan, respecting his sanctity, offered him safe passage. The Sheikh replied: \u201cI have lived with these people in joy; I shall remain with them in sorrow.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

            A sacred hill where, legend says, the Mamun Academy\u2019s library stood. As the Mongols breached the city, forty sages prayed for the salvation of their priceless books.
